Intro

Hello and welcome to my first blog ever!

My name is Nika and I'm a post-graduate student of media studies at Faculty of social sciences in Ljubljana. I'm taking a course, called New media and society and this blog is actually an assignment for this course. I find it very interesting and exciting, because it's something completly new to me. It seems like a good idea, because it really gives us students a chance to be creative and to express our ideas in nonconventional ways. It opens up opportunity to write about different things that come to our minds when reading the literature, to open up questions, dillemas and problems. It seems to me that new media could be successfully integrated into the education process and I am really looking forward to hear the lecture and read the literature about that. Probably I will even consider taking the subject of new media in education as my masters degree theme. We'll see.

So far I have some academic and practical experiences with new media. Considering the fact that I graduated from media studies, I am familiar with some of the theoretical concepts and ideas about digital media, but the theoretical emphasis was really more on the traditional media, such as television and newspaper. That is way I'm happy to take this course, in order to fill my theoretical deficit on new media. Otherwise digital technology is very important part of my everyday life, although I'm not even completly aware of that. I use the internet on daily basis (perheps even hourly-basis) to check my e-mail, to read news, to check our faculty's website and special application ,where I can see my grades and instructions for my course assignments, to check Facebook and sometimes to download a movie, episodes of my favourite series or music (Let's face it - we all do that :)). When I have to write seminar papers I use online libraries and journals (such as SAGE) to search for literature and before the exams I often check the faculty's forum (which is now transformed into a kind of social network) for information, advice.

I'm interested in the power relations in our society, their establishment, maintainance and transformations and the role of the media in it. I'm really looking forward to explore such subjects in this course and to contribute my ideas, thinkings and findings with you in this blog.

Until next time...
